Samsung knows how to instill desire for its handsets. Last year's SGH-A200, its Blue i darling, rode a crest of mass popularity, thanks largely to its trendy looks and blue-illuminated external display. Now the company has gone back to the same formula with the SGH-A800, a phone it's christened the New Blue i.
Small, Thin And Light
Like its predecessor, the Samsung SGH-A800's trump card is its small and lightweight frame. It's easy on the pocket at 68g, while Samsung thoughtfully includes a hand strap with the standard package. The phone occupies a diminutive footprint of 80 x 40mm, which is petite enough to be a ladies' favorite yet not too demure to be shunned by members of the male species. In terms of design, the SGH-A800 is narrower than the color-screen SGH-T100, but otherwise employs the same smooth curves and classy metallic finish. On the downside, there's still the pokey antenna that extends 20mm above the phone's body.
Crisp User Interface
Clamshells with dual displays are no longer a novelty, but Samsung still manages to do a good job at it. The SGH-A200's exterior screen isn't the stingy one-liner found in other phones. Instead, it's large enough to display two rows of text prominently, along with the reception and battery life indicators. The screen on the inside is also ample-sized, capable of showing six lines of text plus with a row of icons. Both displays, plus most of the keypad, are lit in aqua. The phone's internal software is highly responsive, even when accessing SIM card functions such as SMS and addressbook. The buttons, although lacking in key depth, are crisp to the touch. Samsung's menu system is scroll-based and highly intuitive. Shortcuts to your favorite functions can also be assigned for easy access during standby.
