Overview

Nokia is still far ahead of the pack although recent figures suggest consumers are now more willing to give other brands a try. The dualband Nokia 7200 clamshell aims to counter this trend by offering its fans an alternative to its traditional candy-bar phones.

Design

After shying away from clamshell phones for so long Nokia comes up with one that looks like no other ever made. Apart from being the Finnish giant's first GSM clamshell handset, the 7200 will be remembered for its interchangeable Xpress-on textile covers. This is a very bold move to distinguish itself from the clone-like designs of the other brands and adds a new dimension of texture to a mobile. However, care must be taken as dirt and stains may not be easily removed.

The 7200 is neither very large nor very petite, measuring 80 x 50mm. However, it's fairly chunky being 26mm thick and weighing in at 115g. The camera lens is located in the bottom half of the front cover below the external display. With a protruding door-like hinge joining the two halves of the clamshell, this blocky rectangular-shaped phone has looks you'll either love or hate.

The flip opens up to reveal a broad and well-spaced-out keypad. The keys are tactile and sensitive enough albeit quite plasticky. In the dark, the brightly illuminated keypad looks very impressive.
